Causes and Medication for Constipation

Constipation refers to the bowl movements that are infrequent and hard to pass. It slows down the passage of your faeces, which can usually be 3 times or less per week. Depending on your diet, your age and your daily activity, you normally excrete within a day or two. Constipation can occur in adults, young children and babies especially when they have started formula milk or moved on to solids. Constipation can also be experienced in women during pregnancy.
Causes of Constipation
There are a number of factors that can cause constipation, typically it depends on our individual lifestyle. Our dietary habits, such as not eating enough fibre, for example; fruits, vegetables and cereals is one of the main factors. Not drinking enough fluids and lack of exercise can also contribute to the problem.
There are a number of medications that can cause constipation as a side effect, these include:
• Aluminium antacids (medicine to treat indigestion)
• Antidepressants
• Antiepileptic (medicine to treat epilepsy)
